frequently asked questions

How to choose a brand of diaper?

Different situations call for different diapers - as do different shapes and sizes of bottoms!

Some people decide to go the ECO disposable route exclusively and some people use a combination of cloth and disposable. The diaper you choose really is down to personal preference and which diaper fits your child best. Either way, with the diapers from our range, you can rest assured that the choice you make will be gentle on your baby and on nature.

What are the main differences between the various ECO disposable diapers that ecobotts sell?

All the diapers we stock are 100% free from Chlorine bleaching and are free from perfume, lotions, deodorants, dyes and fragrance. They are all designed with natural materials against you baby's skin, not oil-based plastics (unlike conventional disposable diapers). And, because the diapers use natural materials, they allow your baby's skin to breathe - dramatically reducing the chances of your baby developing diaper rash.

Moltex ECO diapers are a premium product for heavy wetter's, night time use, and children who suffer from skin sensitivities and eczema. This diaper is also a great choice for newborns, as in the first few weeks your baby will be feeding every couple of hours and consequentially peeing a lot during the night!

Broody Chick 100% natural diapers, with their super soft lining, are another great choice for newborns. This diaper is certified fully compostable.

Nature Babycare diapers offer a super slim fit due to a unique channel construction which keeps baby dry and comfortable whilst allowing maximum freedom of movement - great when your little one becomes more active and starts taking his or her first steps. This diaper is certified compostable, though the side tabs and leg elastic do not biodegrade and will need to be sifted out and disposed of in the garbage.

Moltex Oko and Nature Babycare disposable diapers use a combination of conventional gel and an environmentally friendly granule which helps to keep the wetness away from the baby's skin. The granule used by Broody Chick is 100% natural.

Do ECO disposable diapers work as well as normal disposable diapers?

Yes! They have all the features of popular disposables such as barrier leg cuffs and a stretchy re-sealable fastening system.

In fact, in our experience, they offer better performance in terms of absorbency and minimizing leaks and, most importantly, in terms of keeping the skin on your baby's bottom dry and healthy. Read the reviews in our Press area.

Each brand uses a mix of wood pulp, cellulose and a minimal amount of polyacrylate which together create an ultra powerful absorbent core. This keeps the wetness away from the baby's skin and, combined with an outer backing of natural ‘breathable' materials, protects against diaper rash.

What about cloth diapers?

All the diapers in our range offer a gentler alternative to standard disposables - both for your baby and for the planet.

The main advantage of AppleCheeks, our cloth diapering option, is the potential to save money. From birth until 30 months of age, your baby will require roughly 5,400 diaper changes. Using disposables, this can add up to between $2,000 - $3,500. With AppleCheeks you can spend as little as $550 for the entire diapering experience and then reuse the diapers on your next child!

So, if you are looking to save money (aren't we all!) and do have your own laundry facilities, it is definitely worth taking a look at AppleCheeks - a great little system that is easy to use and offers a slim, leak-free fit.

How do I know what size diaper to order?

The sizing of Moltex OKO and Nature Babycare is comparable to that of standard disposable diapers. So if your child currently wears a size 3 Pampers/7th Generation, then it is likely the same size eco-diaper will fit them too. However, we recommend you take a look at our Sizing Chart, before placing an order.

Broody Chick sizing is slightly different, please consult the Broody Chick Sizing Chart.

Can eco-disposable diapers help prevent diaper rash?

Yes. ECO disposable diapers are far less likely to irritate skin, cause diaper rash or an allergic reaction, as they are free from unnecessary chemicals and are made from natural 'breathable' materials.

As we all know, changing a diaper as soon as it is soiled is key in preventing diaper rash, the main cause of which is the mixture of pee & poop against your baby's skin (we don't like to get too scientific here!). What your baby eats (or what you eat, if you are still breastfeeding) can also have an impact. Orange juice is a common culprit of a baby's red bottom! (For advice on when it is safe to introduce particular foods into your baby's diet, check with a health professional.)

If my baby has Eczema can they use eco disposables?

Absolutely. They are gentle enough for babies with eczema and other skin problems, as they do not contain unnecessary chemicals. Most parents see a definite improvement in skin condition when their babies use Moltex OKO diapers.

This is my first baby and I'm not sure what I'll need - what would you recommend?

What you need and what you will get through depends on various factors such as the size and growth rate of the baby and which products you personally would like to use, such as cotton wool versus wipes (see below). You may have a couple of places where you change diapers and so wish to double up on diapering supplies.

Take a look at our Newborn Essentials Checklist for information on what you need for a new baby, at home and in hospital.

How many diapers will my baby get through in a day?

Paediatricians recommend that in a 24 hour period a newborn should be changed 10-12 times a day (every 2-3 hours - changing your newborn baby's diaper half just before, or half way through a feed is a good memory trigger), down to about 6 a day as they get older.

Diapers should be changed as soon as they are soiled. Babies should also have some time during the day without a diaper on at all, such as before bath time. See our Newborn Essentials Checklist for more advice on what you may need.

Why don't you stock Seventh Generation?

There are other brands that are marketed as 'green' alternatives - such as Seventh Generation and Earth's Best Tendercare - but these diapers still use a polymer layer to stop leaks. Polymer, often described as 'non-woven cloth' is actually oil-based plastic formulted to feel like cloth.

ecobotts does not stock diapers with a plastic layer because we believe that, not only is this a waste of resources but, most importantly, diapers with a plastic layer prevent proper air-circulation and so are not as effective at guarding against diaper rash.
